Oakland-based artist Jenny Wehrt specializes in original and custom pop-portraiture, choosing subjects that pick up where Andy Warhol left off. Her post-pop subjects are often inspired by heroes of the rock underground such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Robert Smith, Iggy Pop, Ian Curtis, Morrissey and Jarvis Cocker.
Ms. Wehrt departs from traditional pop painting in her depiction of underground subjects in the pop medium, thereby adding further facets of irony. “Andy Warhol,” says Jenny “was interested in automation, fame and commercialization. I’m interested in the cultural underbelly. Paris Hilton simply doesn’t interest me as a subject.” Wehrt’s body of work also includes hundreds of custom portraits of her clientele, effectively erasing a “high” and “low” art divide between Art and Home Décor.
